Abstract
Hyperbilirubin is elevated serum bilirubin levels in the blood that exceed normal values. This situation often occurs in newborns, both babies born normal and babies born prematurely. Babies with hyperbilirubin will appear yellow (jaundice) or jaundiced on the skin, sclere and nails. Not all mothers who have newborns know that their babies have hyperbilirubin, if not immediately given intervention, the baby can die. Therafi to overcome hyperbilirubin in the hospital is to do blue light therapy. The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge and attitudes of mothers about hyperbilirubin in infants undergoing blue light therapy at the Stella Maris Hospital for Women and Children (RSIA), Medan. This type of research is descriptive. The population is all mothers who have newborn babies in RSIA as many as 77 people. The samples were mothers who had newborn babies and underwent blue light therapy as many as 30 people with accidental sampling technique. From this study it was concluded that the majority of mothers had good knowledge as many as 27 people (90%) and the majority of mothers' attitudes were positive as many as 28 people (93.3%). It is hoped that mothers who have newborns will increase their knowledge of hyperbilirubin and if they find signs of jaundice, they should take their babies to the hospital for blue light therapy. Nurses are expected to provide information to mothers who have newborns, especially mothers whose babies undergo blue light therapy in order to explain the length of treatment, implementation procedures and its complications so that mothers are not afraid if their babies undergo therapy.
